Working with video online is becoming a popular task and an important part of getting the content online is the upload part. There are a great number of approaches to uploading video all with their pros and cons. While I have great respect for video services like youtube.com, that have pioneered the way of web video and deliver huge amounts of content daily, there are solutions that are built for professional video content owners and webmasters that solve many issues a free mass public service can’t afford to look after. There are problems with large video files, automated and semi processing and multiple video uploads.

Large size video uploads

Uploading large video files to most online services is not allowed at all. There are limitations ranging from 60 to 300MB with video services like youtube.com, dailymotion.com,blip.tv etc. And with a 200MB file chances are that you will have quite common failures if your uplink connection isn’t perfect. The largest limitation of file size I’ve seen on these sites is 800MB and I’ve never heard of anyone actually succeeding with such a file.

At StreamingVideoProvider there are several powerful solutions that allow uploading and publishing of huge video files like 16GB+ now how’s that? That’s 16,000MB compared to 300MB.

Automated video uploads

Automated video uploads from your own website’s content management system to a video service is possible with some APIs(application program interface). Well youtube.com does have a server to server upload API. Which is nice… Except it does not work for large files as it’s a synchronous call and it’s hardly reliable in terms of tracking state. StreamingVideoProvider goes a few steps further. Besides the more elaborate API available there are notifications of the encoding process and the size limits do not exist.

Mass video uploads

Uploading multiple files is tedious task at best and can take months for some larger libraries. Again at SVP there is a solution that allows you to put your content on a server that’s convenient for you and allow the SVP system to process your content automatically. You get notifications when it’s done. That’s it. It’s called “FTP Pull uploader”, which is a bit confusing since there is a HTTP version too ;)

That’s to name a few differences between professional and free video hosting solutions in regard to video uploads.
